Cooper Kupp Trade: Top Landing Spots for Rams Star Receiver

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp announced via social media on Monday that the team intends to trade him immediately. The 31-year-old, a franchise icon and Super Bowl LVI MVP, expressed disappointment but vowed to stay motivated for his next chapter. The decision follows a decline in his role behind rising star Puka Nacua and concerns about his age (he turns 32 in June) and injury history (18 missed games since 2022) . Below are the top teams linked to Kupp as potential destinations.  

1. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers are frequently mentioned due to their desperate need for a reliable slot receiver. George Pickens, their current top wideout, has shown inconsistency, and the team lacks a proven target for short-yardage situations. Kupp’s experience and leadership could stabilize the offense, especially with uncertainty at quarterback (Justin Fields or a rookie). Analysts suggest Pittsburgh might offer a mid-round draft pick (3rd or 4th) to secure him .  

2. Detroit Lions

Detroit’s high-powered offense, led by coordinator Ben Johnson, could become unstoppable with Kupp. While the Lions already have Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta, adding Kupp would create matchup nightmares for defenses. The team is in "win-now" mode after a strong 2024 season and sees Kupp as a potential Super Bowl catalyst .  

3. Los Angeles Chargers

Staying in Los Angeles is possible if the Chargers pursue Kupp. Partnering with Justin Herbert and rookie Ladd McConkey would give the Chargers a dynamic duo. Kupp’s family could remain settled, and the team has the cap space to absorb his $20 million salary. However, the Rams might hesitate to trade him to a division rival .

With the third-most cap space ($120 million), Washington can easily afford Kupp. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels thrived in 2024 but lacked a reliable No. 2 receiver behind Terry McLaurin. Kupp’s short-area route-running fits Kliff Kingsbury’s quick-pass system, reviving his role as a possession receiver .  

5. New England Patriots

The Patriots have the NFL’s highest cap space and a dire need for offensive weapons. Kupp could mentor rookie QB Drake Maye and provide a safety net for a team rebuilding its roster. However, New England’s lack of playoff readiness might deter Kupp, who prioritizes championship contention .  

6. Buffalo Bills

Buffalo, a perennial AFC contender, sees Kupp as the missing piece to dethrone the Chiefs. His ability to adjust routes for scrambling QB Josh Allen and complement young receivers Keon Coleman and Khalil Shakir makes him appealing. The Bills’ tight cap space, however, complicates a deal unless the Rams absorb part of his salary .

His $20 million salary is cheaper than Higgins’ potential $26 million franchise tag, freeing funds to address their weak offensive line. However, Cincinnati’s limited draft capital could hinder trade talks .

The Chiefs, eyeing a third straight Super Bowl, need receiver help with Rashee Rice injured and free agents likely leaving. Kupp’s chemistry with Patrick Mahomes could mirror his success with Matthew Stafford. Salary cap constraints mean the Rams might need to retain part of Kupp’s contract .
